Things to know about Newcastle, WA

Found on the eastern side of King County, Washington, Newcastle is home to 11,681 residents according to a recent census estimate.

While the city – which takes it name from the English city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne – was not formally incorporated until 1994, the history of settlements in the area stretches back to the 1870s. After the discovery of coal along the aptly-named Coal Creek in 1863, mining became a major focus in the area, with up to 100 tons of coal being produced each day at the height of production. While coal mining ceased in the area in the 1960s – with an estimated 13 million tons of coal having been extracted by the time the mines closed, – the long success of the industry has shaped much of Newcastle’s development and growth, while also influencing the growth and success of the nearby Port of Seattle.

Newcastle is particularly well known for its incredible natural views, particularly with residents seeking the opportunity to enjoy the views of the hilly terrain that surrounds the area. Properties located at the highest elevations can enjoy sights including metropolitan hubs such as Bellevue and Seattle, as well as the natural wonder of the Olympic Mountains. Other natural highlights include the likes of Lake Boren Park, which is notable for its excellent – and continually growing –  trail system, as well as Cougar Mountain on the eastern side of the city.

In addition to the natural wonders on show, the city is also considered to be a truly wonderful place to live – a fact that has been confirmed by high rankings in lists considering the best places to live in the US. The CNN Money rankings in 2011 placed Newcastle in the top 20 in the United States; an accolade followed on the heels of Newsweek naming Newcastle as the 17th best place to live in the United States.

Perhaps the most notable site in Newcastle is its golf complex, including two championship 18-hole courses; the Coal Creek and China Creek courses. Both courses are renowned for their spectacular views over Mount Rainier, Lake Washington, and two mountain ranges. The entire complex covers 350 acres, and includes practice facilities, a large clubhouse, and even restaurant and dining options.
