Custom Millwork FAQ
What counts as custom millwork?
Anything milled and fitted to your home rather than bought off the shelf: cabinetry, crown molding, baseboard and door trim, ceiling trims and coffers, columns, fireplace mantels, stair treads, railings and balustrades, window casings, and built-ins. Higgason Construction builds all of it for interiors and exteriors across the Eastside.
Can you match the existing trim in my house?
Yes. We profile the existing molding and match the species, dimensions, and reveal so new work in a remodeled room lines up with the rest of the house. If the original profile is no longer stocked, we have it milled.
Paint-grade or stain-grade, and does it change the price?
Paint-grade millwork uses poplar, MDF, or primed pine and costs less; stain-grade uses cedar, hemlock, fir, oak, or hardwoods chosen for the grain and costs more in material and finishing. Both are quoted after the free consultation, and we will show you samples of each.
How is millwork priced?
By the linear foot for trim and moldings, and per piece for mantels, built-ins, railings, and cabinetry, with the wood species and finish driving most of the difference. You get a written price after a free in-home consultation.
How long does a millwork project take?
Trim and molding in a single room is measured in days; a staircase, built-in wall, or whole-house trim package takes longer and is scheduled in writing. Stain-grade work adds finishing time for sanding, staining, and sealing.
